mIRC is equipped with lots of smart tools to make your time on IRC a joy instead of a
struggle with strange commands and events.
Listing channels in mIRC
IRC Chat networks offer you huge amounts of channels all with different chat topics. mIRC's
List Dialog helps you finding your way trough these thousands of channel names by
some very detailed filtering features. You can easily search for one or more words matching
channel names and channel topics. mIRC will sort all channels matching the search and present
them in a List window.
To filter away unwanted channel names or topics mIRC offers the Hide function. In this
example mIRC will search for the words win and mirc but hide all channels matching
one of the words (or sub-strings) unix, os/2, atari or c64.
You can use the hide function to filter away offensive and/or anoying channel names and discussion
topics. You might want to use it to block easy access to, and search for, channel names and topics
you'd rather not see your employees or children participating in. Keep in mind that it does
not actually -block- access to any channel or topic!
By the Lock button you can enable mIRC's Password protection on the Hide
function. Setting a Password will lock, encrypt and mask the set of words you selected
to hide from the channel list.
Once you password protected the set of hidden words (or sub-strings) the List Dialog
will look like this. The Unlock button allows you to disable or change the hide function
settings..... assuming you remember your password of course...
The User Central
The User Central in mIRC combines up-to-date user information with a database
manager storing info for later reference. With all the people you will meet on IRC and the
habit of people to change nickname it is sometimes hard to remember who is who. This is where
the storage options in the User Central will help you. The User Central can be accessed
by the command /uwho {nickname} and from the channel names list and private window
popup menus.
The Channel Central
Double clicking in any channel window in mIRC brings you to the Channel Central. This
dialog very clearly shows the current Channel modes, Bans and Topic
settings. You dont need to know any of the difficult mode commands; mIRC will handle them
for you. With to-the-point information you will be told what settings you can change and what
not, depending or being channel operator or not.
The Font selection dialog
mIRC offers you full control over the Fonts used in the various windows. You can specify
overall font settings for all windows of the same type, or set special fonts in specific
windows. The Font selection dialog can be accesses by the /font command or from
the System Menu found in every window.
The Channel Folder
You can store frequently joined or favorite channel names in the Channel Folder. This
dialog will popup on startup with some suggestions for people new to IRC.
